Innovation with Artificial Intelligence: The Future of Cherry Production in Chile

Writer's picture: Alexis EstayAlexis Estay

Researchers at the Universidad de O’Higgins have launched an innovative project aimed at optimizing cherry production through the use of artificial intelligence. This initiative focuses on implementing LoRaWAN sensors and computer vision techniques to reduce risks associated with climate conditions and improve crop management in the region, which is the main exporter of cherries to China.

The project's primary goal is to monitor critical variables for cherry tree development in real time, such as soil moisture, temperature, and solar radiation. To achieve this, low-energy sensors will be used to transmit data via the LoRaWAN network, ensuring broad and efficient coverage in the orchards. These data will be processed using artificial intelligence algorithms to generate precise recommendations on irrigation, fertilization, and other agricultural practices.

Additionally, the project incorporates the use of computer vision to assess the maturity and quality of the cherries. Through specialized cameras and image processing techniques, it will be possible to identify patterns and characteristics that indicate the optimal harvest time, as well as detect potential diseases or pests in early stages. This will allow producers to make more informed and timely decisions, improving the efficiency and profitability of their crops.

This technological approach not only aims to increase cherry productivity and quality but also to contribute to more sustainable agriculture. By optimizing the use of resources like water and fertilizers, environmental impact is minimized, and more responsible crop management is promoted. The Universidad de O’Higgins thus reaffirms its commitment to innovation and agricultural development in the region, positioning it at the forefront of advanced technology applications in fruit farming.
